New Kids on the Block

Jack came into the house, yesterday afternoon, and announced that he saw a chickadee go into the birdhouse! We’ve never had a chickadee in that birdhouse – just the house wrens – so this is big news. Chickadees are so darned cute. Will try to get a picture.

Later in the day I saw Mrs. Chickadee perched on a branch at the top of the cranberry bush. Her little head was bobbing all around - checking to see if anyone was watching, I think – as she hopped onto a lower branch. Then another branch lower still. And another. Finally, she paused just outside the birdhouse “door” for a minute. When Mr. Chickadee landed on a nearby branch, (he’s the lookout) she hopped inside the house.

That’s how the wrens were, too. There were always two of them – one inside the house and one standing guard.

I’m going to try to keep a close eye on the situation, though. Just in case that wren decides to make a fuss. I hope there is some sort of “gentlemen’s agreement” in the bird kingdom. I don’t know just how territorial birds are. Or if some species are territorial and some aren’t.

I’m a little nervous…

  1. I didn't know that birds did that...it's cool, the whole one guarding while one is inside.
Hey, can you get another birdhouse? Or would they not use it?

  2. Yesterday afternoon I talked to someone who knows a lot about birds and she said that she doesn't think the wrens will bother the chickadees. So I feel a little better...it's really fun to watch them.

I just love reading your comments. It's part of what makes blogging so much fun, don't you think?

Unfortunately, because of a recent spat of spam, for awhile I'll be reviewing comments before publishing them.

Thanks for understanding.
