The Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis

The Museum of Russian Art
Friday morning Jack and I went to the Twin Cities for the weekend.   Because of this broken ankle,  I've spent the past six weeks confined to the house except for trips to the doctor.  Getting out of town was such a treat and I was positively giddy with excitement!

What a terrific weekend!  On Saturday we went to the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis with Jack's sister and her husband.  Their father was Czechoslovakian and was raised in the Russian Orthodox faith.

We first noticed the Museum of Russian Art one day while we were on our way to Jennie's new house.   And ever since then, we've talked about spending a day there.  So imagine our delight when Jack's sister and her husband gave us tickets to the museum for Christmas!

It's amazing.  The website declares that this is "the only museum in North America dedicated exclusively to the preservation and presentation of Russian art and artifacts."

The picture I've posted at the top of this page doesn't do justice to this beautifully restored historic building.  However, the website has an outstanding selection of photos HERE, including a couple of excellent photographs of the outside of the museum as well as beautiful pictures of the various galleries inside the museum.

Example of Russian Lacquerware
If you click on  THIS LINK you'll be able to see slide shows of the paintings on display plus a look into the exhibit of the Tzars' Imperial China and the room that holds a collection of Russian Lacquer Boxes.  The intricacies of this art form are amazing.

If you simply must own a Russian lacquer box, you can purchase a beautiful piece for only $25,000 in the gift shop!   If I remember correctly, it's a lacquered cigar box.  Fortunately, there are lots of beautiful items for sale in the gift shop that the average person can actually afford.

All in all, it was a lot of fun.  I hope you have the time to look at the photos on the website.  And if you're ever in Minneapolis, Minnesota you'll want to make time for a visit in person.   You will be impressed.

Sunday was another fun filled day.  I'll post about that tomorrow.

NOTE: The photographs I've posted here have been obtained through Creative Commons licensed content at Flickr .

I just love reading your comments. It's part of what makes blogging so much fun, don't you think?

Unfortunately, because of a recent spat of spam, for awhile I'll be reviewing comments before publishing them.

Thanks for understanding.
