American White Pelicans on Lake Mary

Last night we were sitting on the porch visiting with our good friends, Karen and Terry.  Karen spotted this pretty pelican on the lake between our neighbors dock and theirs.

I grabbed the camera and headed out to our deck to see if I could capture a shot or two.  I zoomed in as much as I could without totally blurring the image.

This guy (or gal) was just enjoying a leisurely swim.  He'd swim out a bit past the docks and then circle around and come closer to shore.

I think he (or she) might have been looking for another.

Then, I caught a photo just as he was beginning his flight...I love how you can see the splash of the water as he pushed himself into the air.

A minute or two later, we saw him with his partner...flying off into the sky.

(I've decided that this was a male and he was patiently waiting for his female partner...a romantic pelican encounter, perhaps?)  It's their mating season, I learned from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website.
It was pure luck that I caught them in flight because I was back in the porch by then and they were really moving quickly.

So....although these photos aren't the best quality, they're certainly better than no photos!!

If you visit this DNR link you can read more about them.   It really is interesting.

There are excellent photos of the colonies in a report by researchers at The University of Minnesota.  You have to scroll down a bit and skip past the technical stuff but there are maps and photos of the American White Pelicans in Minnesota.

  1. I had over two hundred, maybe two hundred fifty, on the river at my place this spring. What a magnificent scene they were. I had not seen them before "in person," that I recall, only the brown in south Texas. Aren't they fun to see? Seeing birds with their mates is always nice. Lovely photos.

  5. It's amazing how we can learn from the animals, well men really should! lol I find it fascinating how birds can take off from the water into full flight. Very nice shot of the pelican doing just that. Enjoy your day Cheryl!

  6. Lovely pictures! It must have been so exciting to catch that action shot. I'm going to have to replace my broken camera so I can start taking pictures again. Keep on snapping!

  9. They are so fine those pelicans. I can see that it must have been a lovely and sunny evening. The light is soft and golden and the water like a mirror. I can almost feel the air in those photos.

  10. Excellent shots, Cheryl! We don't have pelicans this far north, so it was a treat to see this post. Thanks!

  12. I LOVE the picture of the pelican taking flight - so cool!

I wish I had my camera on my bike ride today - a Momma and baby deer crossed my path, as well as a giant toad and a squirrel that I almost ran over - so crazy!

  14. I love these photos. I think we get lots of pelicans in Santa Cruz. I don't take many photos of them. It's raining today so the pelicans are soaked. But look, I'm not complaining!!! Happy smoothies to you!
