It seems as though there is an elf...or a fairy...living in a hollow tree not very far from Jennie's house. It's on the shores of Lake Harriet, a beautiful lake in the middle of Minneapolis. Do click on the link in the last sentence to see some pretty pictures and learn a little more about Lake Harriet.
According to the Wikipedia article:
For several years, one could leave a letter for the elf supposedly living there and find a letter in reply sometime in the next few days. During the winter season, the elf door is shut and a plank appears stating he has "moved to his castle in the east." It reopens around springtime.
You can still leave letters there. Sometimes there are little gifts, as well. It's said that the little elf (or fairy) answers 1500 to 2000 letters every year!
The very next day I went in search of this tiny landmark. And while I was there, a small boy and his mother walked by.
He crouched down near the door and watched for a few minutes....maybe he was wondering if anyone was home.
Then he reached out and opened the door.
Sure enough...there were letters there, too.
So cool!
(Thanks, Doug, for letting me know about this little elf (or fairy)! You're the best.
Well, my friends, I've lots more to post but I've been incredibly busy lately with this smoothie catering...I had no idea it would take off like it has! Jack said I've created a monster!
After tomorrow I should have a couple of days to catch up on my blog reading and answering comments. "Should have" is the operative phrase, here, though!

This is an amazing find. I so love the little elf door and the spirit of magic and friendship that goes along with it. Nice find. Thanks for telling us about it.

Hello, Yesterday my six year son and I explored the southern shore of Lake Harriet in search of the elf's home. We could not find it! Do you know if we should return for another look (we certainly may have overlooked it), or if the elf has vacated the premises? Thanks, Martha R.
ReplyDeleteI am soooo late in responding to these comments...my sincere apologies. Thanks so much to Hilary for the POTW mention. You are the best!
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone, for the kind comments and welcome to those who stopped in from The Smitten Image.
Martha R., you and your son should definitely return for another look. If you take Lake Harriet Parkway to Queen, you'll find some steps leading down to the lake. At the bottom, just before the walking path, you'll see the tree on your right. Please let me know if you find it!
