It's too nice to be indoors...that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Summer is a double-edged sword for me.  Particularly here in Minnesota where our summers are short but sweet.  The past few weeks have been busy with our smoothie business...summer art fairs and festivals and catering graduation parties, etc.

And now that we have a couple of relatively free weeks, the weather has been so nice that I haven't wanted to be indoors.  You totally understand, of course.

So here are a few photographs I've taken now and then the past few weeks.

A Pileated Woodpecker munching on a dead stump

A bit blurry but that guy was battering that stump so fast I'm quite pleased that I got any shot at all!

In fact, here's what I was dealing with...it pretty much illustrates what I mean.

Do you see his head?  Didn't think so.

Then we have the gardens.  Lots of gardens.

Our lakescape has totally gone wild...Jack is doing his best to keep it under control but I think it's a lost cause.

It's pretty, though.  I kind of wish it was a little more structured but you just can't structure Mother Nature.
Prairie Smoke - A Minnesota Native Wildflower

Prairie Smoke
The purpose of a lakescape is to assure that the pollutants that wash off impervious surfaces (like roofs, roads, etc.) are filtered before they reach the lake.  It's so nice that they're beautiful, too.

Also, when we have a heavy rain and the water washes down the slope, the lakescape keeps it from washing away the shoreline.  So we have a nice sandy beach.  End of speech. :-)

Cream Wild Indigo

This Cream Wild Indigo is a luscious wildflower...

Remember that Snow-on-the mountain ground cover that I said was getting out of control in A Few Spring Snapshots?

This is what the blossoms look like.   And it's so out of control, now, that you can't even see the water barrel, anymore!!

I remember Wild Roses growing along the country fence lines when I was growing up.

So delicate looking but the minute you tried to pluck one from the bush, you more often than not ended up sticking your fingers with the thorns.  When we chose the native flowers for our lakescape, I definitely wanted Wild Roses.  They're called Prairie Roses, here, but they're the same.

And they will still poke your fingers with their thorns if you try to pick them...so I don't.  I just enjoy them the way they are.

I haven't even looked at comments or messages for more than a week so that's what I'm going to do, now.  Tomorrow is supposed to be very hot and I plan to spend a good part of the day catching up with all of you.

  2. Pretty pics! I love flowers. Lucky you to have captured the pileated woodpecker! They are so rare and I wish I could photograph one.
    Maybe one day.
Enjoy the summer, they're so short!

  3. So much beauty. You need to take a wide angle shot so we can get an idea of what the whole lakescape looks like. Great shot of the pileated woodpecker. They're such beautiful and interesting birds.

  5. Some days I feel just like that woodpecker! lol Landscaping is a never ending job, that's just the way it is and I've grown to accept that. I'm just about caught up at the farm and soon I'll have to head home and then the fun begins. I'll be posting on that end once the work begins IF the roofing gets out of the way soon.

I have a few wild rose bushes here, the farm dog stays clear of them! I love your Wild Indigo, they are so pretty.

We are truly blessed to have dirt to play in, it sure beats the heck out of shoveling the snow! Have a great evening and not to worry, blogger isn't going anywhere that I've heard of. :-)

  7. The flowers are beautiful. Sounds like your smoothie business has really taken off.

We could have used smoothies at the Tomato Festival this past weekend.

  8. I found all your lakescape plantings really interesting. What a wonderful idea to help save our lakes from pollution! You have such a lovely spot there, it must be like a vacation home.

  9. We got a kick out of the woodpecker, yes his head must me going so fast but the rest of him is still.
So it is actually a great picture.

    The flowers are so lovely.

How are you doing? Sounds like you are doing lots and work with the smoothie business. How are your muscles?

We have been working in the garden and the yard and like you, trying to be outside more.

  10. The wild roses here are almost finished now. I think the heavy rains we've experienced hastened their demise.
Love the prairie smoke flowers - I've never seen those before.
I can relate to the difficulties experienced in trying to photograph pileated woodpeckers, but yours are excellent shots.

  11. Hej Cheryl! It's fun this photo with the woodpecker. I know how it is. Birds move too much! The beautiful flowers are easier to catch, and it's lovely to see such vigorous growth. Love the rose. Great photos!
    Have a nice week-end!

  12. BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS!!! Sch pretty pictures, and that "woodpecker" is GORGEOUS! I am amazed that you got one picture with his head "still"....Fabulous!!! All the flowers are sooo very very pretty. Summer may be short there in Minn. but, it is very very sweet!

A trip to Sweet Lady Jane's is a "must" if you are in L.A. It is small, but Oh My!!!! And there are a few little tables so that one can pick something out and eat it right there---At least, there used to be....It has been at least 6 years since I have been there, in the Bakery/Store....But, it is 'The Best'!!

  13. Thanks so much for all the wonderful comments. Yesterday I replied to each and every one of them. When I clicked on "Post Comment" I was booted out of the blog and onto the "Sign In" page. "WHAAAT?????", I thought with a sinking feeling...tried to go back to that page but no luck.

There's a lesson, here...it's this: From now on I will select and copy my replies BEFORE I hit "Post Comment" and paste them into my notepad.

Sometimes I'd just like to strangle Blogger. It's been good to me most of the time but what really irritates me is that there is no "human" to help when disasters like this strike.

    End of rant....

I just love reading your comments. It's part of what makes blogging so much fun, don't you think?

Unfortunately, because of a recent spat of spam, for awhile I'll be reviewing comments before publishing them.

Thanks for understanding.
