Lake Mary Reflections

Yesterday our friends, Mike & Barb, called to see if we wanted to go for a boat ride.  The weather was perfect...no wind so Lake Mary was calm.

We were out on the lake for almost three hours, I think, just cruising slowly and looking at the beauty of the lake and chatting about this and that.  It was so peaceful.

Even the clouds are reflected in this shot!
Since our storms this summer, we've been under a "no wake" rule.  The shoreline suffered much erosion so the DNR has ordered that there be no watercraft causing a wake within a certain distance from shore.  It's a good rule.

As much fun as it is to go tubing behind a speedboat at breakneck speed with willing bodies being flung hither and yon (not me, of course...the kids and grandkids), I love the autumn when the tourists have all gone home and our lake is a private sanctuary once again.

The flooding was terrible on the other side of the lake.  As sad as I was to lose our beach, some of the homes across the water lost their entire yards!
These trees are actually on someone's property...now they're standing in lake water.

Look closely at the photo below and you'll notice a tree entirely uprooted and laying on it's side.
That "blob" in the  middle of the shot is the root ball!

We cruised the perimeter of Lake Mary. Although there are quite a few homes on our lake, much of the shoreline is uninhabited.

There are lots of reeds and grasses which makes for great fishing, I'm told. Those bass and walleye and sunfish, etc. have an ideal habitat.

A little further on, we noticed that there is a new bald eagle nest. There were two enormous eagle nests in this area but they were destroyed back in July when we had those terrible winds. We spotted an eagle in one of the trees nearby. Mike said that eagles only use their nests for raising their young...they don't actually "live" in them. Who knew??

Where's Waldo...Can you spot the bald eagle?  Click to enlarge.
Oh, there he is!
Taking flight...

While we were heading back toward our little cove, we came upon a couple - each paddling a kayak - and had a little visit as we were all bobbing about on the lake. They live several miles away but had brought their kayaks to Lake Mary for an evening ride. Then, with the sun almost setting, they headed back to shore.

It was a lovely evening.   We really need to do this more often.  Note to self...

  3. What a lovely lake, despite the problems with the shoreline property. I trust it will return next summer. It looks like the type of lake I'd love to canoe. Beautiful reflections in that first picture.

  4. It sounds as if this was a rough summer on Lake Mary, but your evening boat ride on this day makes all the bad stuff seem like a distant memory. It looks so beautiful and peaceful, and the water was like glass. Lovely pictures.

  9. What a lovely lake. I love the reflections in the water. A lake like this is a good place to be. Peaceful. You can hear every little sound from birds - and bumblebees!
